Fifteen years have elapsed since the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action for the Advancement of Women. In March this year, the 15 year review of progress made in implementing recommendations in the Platform for Action will take place at the 54th session of the Commision on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York.

Several online discussions are planned on each of the 12 critical areas of concern contained in the Platform for Action. The discussion on critical area  'J' on 'Women and the Media' is scheduled to take place from 1 to 28 February, 2010.

1. Increase the participation and access of women to expression and decision-making in and through the media and new technologies of communication;
2. Promote a balanced and non-stereotyped portrayal of women in the media.
 
The online discussion will run for four weeks and address the following issues:

Week One – 1 to 7 February: Achieving gender equality in media organizations through adequate policies;                                    
Week Two – 8-14 February: Addressing the gender gap (Equal Jobs – Equal Pay) – Women working in the media;                            
Week Three – 15-21 February: Portrayal of women in media and gender stereotyping;                                                                                        
Week Four – 22-28 February: Violence against women journalists and any other issues; and wrap-up and recommendations.

It provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and networks to share views, experiences and achievements, to identify gaps and challenges, and to propose future action to improve women’s participation in the media area.
