Participating in the GMMP

Participation is expected from the countries listed in the chart below. More volunteers are needed to collaborate with us! Send an email to The Coordinator GMMP 2009/2010 if you would like to take part in the monitoring.

How the monitoring is organised

On one day hundreds of individuals across the world study the representation and portrayal of women and men in their news media - television, radio and newspapers. In some countries several groups are involved in the monitoring. In these countries there are national coordinators who are responsible for liaison and communication with the individual monitors. In some regions there is also a regional coordinator who works with the national coordinators to streamline the monitoring process across the different countries.

The national and regional coordinators ensure that each individual monitor understands what is expected, that an appropriate range of media is selected for study, and that the results are submitted on time. The GMMP Global Coordinator at WACC will inform you about the arrangements for national/regional coordination in your country/region.

Data collection, analysis and reporting

Monitors use a standardised set of monitoring tools to collect the necessary information. Monitors record their observations in the coding sheets provided and send the results to the data analyst for collation. An electronic data capture tool will be provided to monitors to send the data for analysis electronically via e-mail. Where electronic submission is difficult, monitors post the completed coding sheets directly to the data analyst. All materials - news clippings, etc., will also be posted to the data analyst. For GMMP 2009/2010. the data analyst is Media Monitoring Africa (formerly Media Monitoring Project) a non-governmental organisation in Johannesburg. The results of each Global Media Monitoring Project are published by the WACC and are available to all participants in the form of a report and on the Internet. National data will be provided to countries that wish to produce reports based on their own particular findings. A reporting template and the analysed data and charts will be made available to national co-ordinators to compile their national reports.

The list of countries is not exhaustive! Let us know if your country is not listed and you would like to take part by sending an email to The Coordinator GMMP 2009/2010.
